Tours are made by appointment and held in Bayfield Co. Wisconsin at a predetermined location with your mushroom guide. If you have specific interests, such as photographing mushrooms or cooking mushrooms, We can customize your tour.

Hello! My Name is Arne Martinson. I have been an avid mushroom guide, forager, and mycologist for more than 10 years. I am Vice President of the Wisconsin Mycological Society and a longtime member of the North American Mycological Association. Outdoor education is my passion and I love sharing my appreciation of nature and the Wisconsin mushrooms.
Not only will we learn about mushrooms, we will be doing it in some of the most beautiful places around. Through old growth forests, across waterfalls, and on the shores of Lake Superior. Our Bayfield tours have something for everyone!
These tours have something for everyone and are a truly high quality experience. However, If you are not satisfied with your tour, you will receive a full refund.
2-3 hour tours
This tour is for the adventurous. Day trips will be 5-8 hours depending on conditions. We will drive or boat to a predetermined location for a whole day of foraging and experiencing the northwoods.
An introduction to mushrooms and how they work!
Using a guide, taking spore prints, and learning the basics.
Learning toxic mushrooms, ethical and legal harvesting tactics, along with storage and preparation techniques.
Using GPS, Forestry, and other techniques to maximize your results.
Collect edible mushrooms and learn to cook with them in the field.
Learn to take great photos of Mushrooms and other forest delights! Participants are encouraged to bring their own cameras or smartphones.
These classes offer a more specific way to tailor your adventure!
A half-day assessment will be done of your property during peak mushroom season to assess fungal diversity and abundance.
Multiple visits throughout the season to document full range of fungal diversity on your property

Group tours can be for as many as 30 people!
We are able to book children of all ages. Children under 5 are free, and a discount is given for those under 12. Please let us know if you plan to bring children and we will tailor your experience to your needs!
We prefer that you leave dogs at home unless the are well behaved in the woods. We are happy to make accommodations if this is not possible.
The tour will start with introductions and a quick talk about basic mushroom biology and identification. After determining your skill level, we will venture into the woods to find mushrooms and learn about them at a pace you can appreciate. We will see dozens of interesting and beautiful varieties, and learn how to stay safe picking mushrooms. If we find any unique or potentially new species we will send them in for DNA sequencing.
Yes! For tours on Madeline Island, guests are required to pay their ferry fees and the fees of their guide. It is also recommended that you bring a car to make the most of your visit.
Gratuities are not included in the tour price but are greatly appreciated!
Guests are encouraged to bring a basket or paper bag for collecting mushrooms, a way to take visual or written notes if they like, bug spray, and a sense of adventure!
You are advised to wear long pants and sleeves, close-toed shoes, and bring water if you need it. We will be going off-trail unless guests are not able.
